Crafting Compelling Backstories
A backstory isn’t something you memorize and recite. It’s the foundation that informs your choices during the event. You probably won’t explain your entire history — you’ll hint at it through what you say and how you react.
Create three to five key facts about your character’s past. Why do they know the other players? What brings them to this event? What’s unresolved in their life? A detective might be attending because they suspect someone here of an old crime. A socialite might be here to maintain appearances while managing a scandalous secret. These connections create natural interaction points and give you reasons to seek out certain people.
The best backstories include relationships. Who does your character trust? Who do they dislike? Who makes them uncomfortable? These relationships give you direction. You’ll naturally gravitate toward people you trust and avoid or be suspicious of those you don’t. This creates believable group dynamics without feeling forced.
